About the Theme
The Hiryusai Committee collects candidates for and decides a theme every year, which creates a shared goal among the students in preparing for the festival.
This year's theme is "colour", and on this page, we attempt to define it and show you just how we came up with it.
For themes in the past, please refer to the History page.
Of course, "colour" means... well, colour (color) in English. But then it wouldn't really be a theme, let alone a meaningful one. The meaning we've packed into this simple word is a little bit more than that.
Our theme calls upon our students to define and show their own "colour" - to distinguish themselves from others in a unique way. We also want to make sure that we show our visitors how we're different from other schools - that is, to show our school colours.
Also, we've built upon the verb "to colour", and it could be said that we've silently vowed "to colour our school".
In addition, the "10" that we've substituted for the "lo" in "colour" is an indicator that this is our 10th Hiryusai. We chose this particular spelling mainly for aesthetic reasons. (It looks better with two letters either side of the lo when replaced with 10).
We realise that in some very limited contexts, the word colour may evoke images of racial discrimination. However, our theme does not, of course, promote such practices, and we are strongly against such ideas.
